Issues

Is there an issue that is important to you that you would like to see addressed? Let me know about it and I will address it.

Here are today's major issues addressed below:

Redevelopment

My position on redevelopment remains the same as it has been since inception of the process. Read what I said about redevelopment prior to the May 2007 election by clicking here.

Alexander Road Bridge

Ever since I ran for office in 1999, I have said that we needed to take immediate action toward replacing the Alexander Road Bridge as soon as possible – our fire engines, ambulances, and school buses need safe and quick passage from one side of West Windsor to the other (link to campaign pledge). Although it has taken eight years, the replacement bridge is under construction and should be completed before the end of 2008.

The closure of the bridge while connections are completed and the old bridge removed is something we could have avoided if the Administration had asserted itself. I personally spoke with the engineers who prepared the plans and agreed upon a process that would allow use of the new bridge while those connections were completed and the old bridge removed. It was feasible. This inconvenience to our residents could have been avoided.

Lower Taxes

I voted against the 2008 budget because the amount of tax increase was unreasonable and unnecessary. Taxes in West Windsor are going up faster than they need to be.  Read more by clicking here.

Open Government

An open government is an honest government. Public participation is essential to the train station redevelopment.

An open and transparent relationship between the Mayor and Council also are essential to working for the best interests of our residents. The current Mayor speaks often about working together but withholds important information from Council and the community. For a couple of examples, click here.

I have opened the doors of our local government to a much more open, participatory process:

  • I supported taking Council meetings out of the Council chamber and into the community with meetings at other lcoations.
  • I have reinvigorated this website that I started back in 2004.
  • I have started a blog that encourages public dialogue on important issues and will present polls for community input.
  • I gained the support needed to overturn the votes of Linda Geevers and Franc Gambatese to stop taping Council executive sessions.
  • I supported Council's establishment of Redevelopment Finance Committee meetings that are open to the public.

I will continue to work tirelessly to promote a government that is open, transparent, and accessible to residents.

Open Space

No one is a greater advocate for open space than I have been and continue to be.

Ever since I ran for office in 1999, I have said that preserving open space is essential to maximizing the quality of life in West Windsor (link to campaign pledge). To that end, I dedicated half of my Council salary in 1999 toward boosting membership in FOWWOS and have contributed 100% of my gross Council salary for open space. Click here to read the July 9, 1999 Princeton Packet article about that effort in 1999 or click here for a letter to the Packet from Michael Schuit, President of FOWWOS in the July 13, 1999 issue of the Packet.

Preservation of open space remains a priority for me and I continue to contribute 100% of my Council salary toward open space preservation.

Partisan Elections

The term "partisan election" is redundant. A "nonpartisan election" is an oxymoron.

All politics is partisan in one form or another.

Moving to a partisan form of government would raise the profile of Republicans and Democrats in West Windsor but would not change the way our government works. West Windsor issues are local issues that cross traditional party lines.

I work equally well with people on both sides of the aisle as well as unaffiliated voters. Changing to partisan elections is unnecessary in West Windsor. Read more about my views by clicking here.

Managed Growth

Ever since I ran for office in 1999, I have said that to dedicate financial and professional resources to enacting a solid legislative foundation for sound ordinances managing growth rather than defending losing causes (link to campaign pledge). I have continued to assert that perspective throughout the redevelopment process. This subject is covered at length in my discussion of redevelopment.
